Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Do coffee and tea worsen IBS symptoms?

Coffee and tea are among the most common IBS symptom triggers — but the effect varies between individuals and types.

Coffee Effects:

  • Caffeine stimulates gut motility — speeds bowel movement within 4 minutes of drinking.
  • Increases stomach acid secretion — worsens heartburn and reflux.
  • Even decaf coffee stimulates the gut — due to other acids in coffee.
  • IBS-D effect: May noticeably increase diarrhea.
  • IBS-C effect: One morning cup may help relieve constipation.

Tea Effects:

  • Strong black tea contains enough caffeine to stimulate the gut.
  • Green tea: Lighter — may be tolerable.
  • Peppermint tea: Actually helpful — relaxes intestinal muscles and reduces cramps.
  • Ginger tea: Natural anti-nausea and anti-bloating.

Recommendation:

Try reducing coffee to one morning cup. If symptoms improve, caffeine is your trigger. Switch to herbal teas.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we help you identify your personal triggers precisely.
