Proper home care of surgical wounds is essential for preventing infection and ensuring good healing. Most complications occur from simple avoidable mistakes.
Home Care Rules:
- Hygiene first: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before any wound contact — at least 20 seconds.
- Dressing: Change dressing per doctor's instructions — usually daily or every two days. Use sterile dressings.
- Showering: Don't wet the wound unless physician allows. Cover with waterproof tape if showering is permitted.
- Don't touch: Don't scratch the wound no matter how itchy — itching is a normal healing sign.
- Don't remove scabs: Natural scabs protect new tissue — let them fall off naturally.
- Sun: Avoid wound sun exposure 6-12 months — causes permanent pigmentation.
- Clothing: Wear loose clothes that don't press on the wound.
When to See the Doctor Immediately:
Increasing redness, swelling, local warmth, yellow or green discharge, foul smell, escalating pain, or fever.
