Returning to physical activity after surgery must be gradual and planned — appropriate early activity speeds healing but overexertion causes complications.
General Activity Return Timeline:
- First 24-48 hours: Minimal movement only — sitting, standing, and short walks to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
- Week 1: Light walking at home. Avoid lifting anything heavier than 2 kg. No pulling or straining.
- Weeks 2-4: Gradual increase in walking. Some light activities. No vigorous exercise.
- Weeks 4-6: Most daily activities. Light exercise (swimming after wound closure, stationary bike).
- After 6-8 weeks: Gradual return to regular exercise — with physician approval.
Important Rules:
- Pain is the judge: If you feel pain during any activity — stop immediately.
- Surgery type matters: Simple surgery (cyst removal) ≠ major abdominal surgery. Timeline above is approximate.
- Don't compare: Everyone heals at a different rate.
- Internal healing: Internal tissues heal slower than external skin — even if the wound looks closed.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we monitor wound healing and provide customized recommendations for each patient based on surgery type.
