Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide — an autoimmune disease where the immune system gradually attacks the thyroid gland.
Mechanism:
- Immune system produces antibodies (Anti-TPO) attacking thyroid cells.
- Damage is gradual — may continue for years before symptoms appear.
- Eventually the gland cannot produce enough hormones.
Who Gets It:
- Women 8 times more than men.
- Age 30-50 most common.
- Family history of autoimmune diseases.
- Associated with other autoimmune conditions: Type 1 diabetes, vitiligo, celiac disease.
Treatment:
- Levothyroxine (Eltroxin): Synthetic T4 hormone — one pill daily morning on empty stomach.
- Lifelong: In most cases treatment is continuous — but simple and safe.
- Monitoring: TSH test every 6-8 weeks until dose is adjusted, then every 6-12 months.
Important Tips:
- Take the pill 30-60 minutes before breakfast.
- Don't take with iron or calcium — they reduce absorption.
