Modern anesthesia has made circumcision virtually pain-free during the procedure. Post-operative pain is mild and controlled with painkillers.
Anesthesia Types by Age:
- Newborns (0-40 days):
- EMLA cream (local anesthetic) applied 30-60 minutes before.
- Local injection (Dorsal Penile Nerve Block) — most effective.
- Sucrose pacifier — simple natural analgesic.
- Infants (2-12 months):
- Local anesthesia + EMLA.
- Some cases may need light IV sedation.
- Children (1-10 years):
- Short general anesthesia — so the child doesn't move.
- Very safe with an experienced anesthesiologist.
After Surgery:
- Paracetamol every 6 hours for first two days — sufficient for most cases.
- Ibuprofen can be added if needed (above 3 months of age).
- Most children eat and play normally within hours.
