Quick and correct action with bleeding wounds can save a life or protect the injured limb. Knowing basic steps prevents complications and facilitates later treatment.
Immediate Steps:
- Direct pressure: Place clean cloth (towel, gauze, even clean clothing) on the wound and press firmly for 10-15 continuous minutes. Don't lift to check during this time.
- Elevation: If possible, raise the injured limb above heart level — this reduces bleeding with gravity's help.
- Don't remove foreign objects: If glass or metal is embedded in the wound — don't pull it out. Stabilize it and press around it.
- Pressure bandage: If bleeding doesn't stop with pressure — wrap a pressure bandage above the wound (between wound and heart) with moderate tightness.
What to Avoid:
- Don't apply coffee, kohl, or turmeric — causes infection.
- Don't wipe the wound with alcohol — destroys tissue and delays healing.
- Don't try to suture the wound yourself.
When a Wound Needs a Doctor:
Bleeding that won't stop, deep wound, face or hand wound, nerve injury (numbness) or tendon (inability to move finger).
