Correct first aid in the first minutes after a burn determines the entire healing course. Many common mistakes worsen the damage — learning the correct method could save you or your family.
Most Important Step — Cooling:
- Cool running water (not ice-cold): Directly on the burn for a full 20 minutes. This is the most effective measure — reduces depth, pain, and swelling.
- Temperature: Regular tap water (15-25°C). Ice is prohibited as it causes additional tissue damage.
- Cooling can be done up to 3 hours after the burn: Even if you arrive late — start immediately.
After Cooling:
- Cover the burn with clean cling film — protects from contamination and won't stick.
- Give pain relief (ibuprofen or paracetamol).
- Don't burst blisters — they're a natural dressing.
Prohibited:
- Don't apply toothpaste, butter, or egg — harmful myths causing infection.
- Don't apply ice or ice water directly.
- Don't remove clothing stuck to the burn.
