An abscess is a collection of pus within tissues causing severe pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes fever. The only effective treatment is surgical incision and drainage — antibiotics alone are insufficient.
Treatment Steps at the Center:
- Assessment: We determine abscess size, depth, presence of systemic infection (fever, chills).
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia around the abscess — may be slightly painful as inflamed tissues resist anesthesia, but we use techniques to minimize pain.
- Incision and Drainage (I&D):
- Scalpel incision at the point of maximum fluctuation.
- Express all pus.
- Irrigate cavity with saline.
- Place a wick to keep drainage open.
- Dressing and instructions: Absorbent dressing, antibiotics if surrounding infection present, pain relief.
Follow-up:
Patient returns after 24-48 hours for wick change and drainage monitoring. Complete healing usually 1-3 weeks.
At BEIT TARIQ Center, we treat abscesses quickly and efficiently and follow up until complete healing.
