Tetanus is a serious bacterial disease affecting the nervous system causing muscle spasms that can be fatal. The bacteria exist in soil, rust, and dust — any wound could be an entry point.
When You Need Tetanus Vaccination:
- Contaminated wound: Any wound occurring in a dirty environment — soil, farm, workshop.
- Deep puncture wound: Pin, nail, thorn — especially if rusty.
- Animal bite: Dog, cat, or any animal.
- Burn: Contaminated burns.
- Haven't had vaccine in 10 years: Needs renewal every 10 years.
- Haven't completed 3 primary doses: Need to complete the series.
Protocol:
- Fully vaccinated + last dose less than 10 years + clean wound: No vaccine needed.
- Fully vaccinated + last dose more than 10 years: Booster dose.
- Incomplete or unknown vaccination + contaminated wound: Booster + tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG).
