High blood pressure (Hypertension) is a sustained increase in the force of blood pushing against artery walls exceeding 140/90 mmHg. It's called the silent killer because most patients feel no symptoms until serious complications occur.
Why Is It Dangerous?
- Heart: Strains the heart muscle, doubles risk of heart attack and heart failure.
- Brain: Significantly increases stroke risk — the leading cause of disability.
- Kidneys: Damages tiny kidney vessels — may cause kidney failure.
- Eyes: Damages the retina — may cause vision loss.
- Wounds: Weakens circulation and slows wound and ulcer healing.
Classification:
- Normal: Below 120/80
- Elevated: 120-129 / Below 80
- Stage 1: 130-139 / 80-89
- Stage 2: 140+ / 90+
- Crisis: Above 180/120 — immediate emergency
