Home blood pressure measurement is more accurate than clinic measurement as it avoids "white coat hypertension." But incorrect measurement gives misleading results.
Correct Measurement Steps:
- Device: Use an approved electronic arm cuff (not wrist) — ensure the cuff size fits your arm.
- Before measuring: Sit relaxed for 5 minutes. No smoking, coffee, or activity 30 minutes before.
- Position: Sit with back supported, feet on floor (don't cross legs). Arm on table at heart level.
- Cuff: Place directly on skin — 2 cm above elbow. Not over thick clothing.
- Measurement: Take two readings one minute apart. Record the average.
- Timing: Measure morning before medications and evening — same time daily.
- Record: Log readings in a notebook or app to show your doctor.
When to Worry:
- Consistently above 140/90 = see your doctor
- Above 180/120 = immediate emergency
