Blood Pressure

What is the relationship between high blood pressure and kidney disease?

The relationship between blood pressure and kidneys is a dangerous circular relationship — each worsens the other. High BP damages kidneys, and damaged kidneys raise BP further.

How High BP Damages Kidneys:

  • Damages tiny vessels in kidney glomeruli (kidney filters).
  • Reduces kidneys' ability to filter toxins and excess fluids.
  • Causes protein leakage in urine (Proteinuria) — early sign of damage.
  • Long-term may cause chronic kidney disease (CKD).

How Diseased Kidneys Affect BP:

  • Kidneys secrete renin hormone that regulates pressure — diseased kidneys overproduce it.
  • Retain sodium and fluids so pressure rises further.

Prevention:

  • Control pressure (below 130/80 for kidney patients).
  • Annual kidney function test (Creatinine + eGFR).
  • Urine test for protein detection.

At BEIT TARIQ Center, we test kidney function as part of blood pressure patient follow-up.
