A blood pressure reading consists of two numbers — understanding each helps you monitor your health better.
Top Number — Systolic:
- Measures pressure during heart contraction (pumping blood).
- Most important for assessing heart and stroke risk.
- Naturally rises with age.
- Normal: Below 120 mmHg.
Bottom Number — Diastolic:
- Measures pressure during heart relaxation (between beats).
- Reflects blood vessel resistance.
- Especially important in younger people (under 50).
- Normal: Below 80 mmHg.
Practical Examples:
- 150/85: Systolic elevated (stage 2) — needs treatment.
- 118/92: Diastolic elevated alone — needs evaluation.
- 165/95: Both elevated — needs intensive treatment.
- 95/55: Low pressure — may cause dizziness.
